This is one of the free basic computer user lessons we offered to Escapees during the months of July and August, 2008 at Rainbow's End RV Park in Livingston, TX.

The Computer Desktop and Start Menu

This is a computer desktop. Your computer screen may be a different color and have different symbols on it, but it is still a desktop. The symbols are called icons.

Computer Desktop

The bottom gray bar with different symbols and the clock in it is called your taskbar. If we tell you to look for something or click on something in your taskbar, you want to look for it in the gray bar at the bottom of your screen. Sometimes you will be told to right click on the task bar. This means, place your cursor on a blank space on the taskbar and right click once with your mouse.

In the picture below you see the start menu. This is achieved by placing your cursor on the Start Button and left clicking one time with your mouse.

Start Menu

Below you see the Program Menu. This is achieved by simply placing your cursor over the word “Programs” in the Start Menu.

Program Menu

This is what we mean when we say “Go to Start, Programs…”

Sometimes you will hear the phrase “Go to Start, Settings, Control Panel”. Generally you will click on the Control Panel after you find it, but the important thing to realize is that you find it the same way you found the Program Menu: One left click of the mouse on the Start Button, place your cursor on the word “Settings”, place your cursor on the word “Control Panel”
