The Computer Desktop and My Computer
“My Computer” is your friend. “My Computer” is one of the icons on your desktop. In Windows Vista it is simply called “Computer” and not “My Computer”. The function is basically the same as described here.
Do you see the Control Panel in there? This is the same Control Panel that you can open from Start, Settings! Just another way to find the same thing. Neat, huh? But what we want you to get familiar with in here is “Local Disk C:”. Your C drive is where all of your primary files and folders are located. You can think of your C drive as your computer's filing cabinet. Go ahead and double click on it to open it.
In the picture below you see the start menu. This is achieved by placing your cursor on the Start Button and left clicking one time with your mouse.
You should see several folders listed in there, as shown below. Just as if you opened the drawer of a filing cabinet. Inside each of the folders are several files, and sometimes more folders.
On your own computer, please identify the following four folders within the C drive: Documents and Settings, My Documents, My Pictures, and Program Files. It is ok to click on these folders to open them to discover what is in there. If you get lost or scared, just click on the Back Button in the Tool Bar to go back to the previous screen. Or click on the X in the upper left corner of the window to close it completely.
